"Fast & Figural"
Formula-E Racetrack.
â
In its formal traditions, Formula One racing is almost always constructed as new tracks; figure-ground landscapes designed specifically to accommodate the racing program from a fresh start. Contrarily, Formula E is almost exclusively in accommodation to an urban setting. While vastly different, in both instances there is a clear and defined formal language related to some sense of a claimed natural setting to give meaning to these sites. Through this project, I seek to challenge understandings of urban and rural conditions as landscapes, re-contextualizing each to propose a new, artificial nature.
â
Defined through the lens of racing and automobiles, the notion of landscape biases itself towards a ‘nature’ given meaning by its rural or urban lens. By subverting these framing devices, the project aims to challenge how landscape is constructed in concept and form, through which the act of blurring and disassembly can propose a new hybrid for a yet undefined form of the urban race in the field.
â
The project is located in Watkins Glen, adjacent to the existing racing facilities in the landscape.
