"1009 Flatbush Avenue"

Located at the heart of Brooklyn, East Flatbush sits at a unique inflection point economically and culturally. One of the most special aspects of this neighborhood is the interdependency of its residents and business owners; formal and informal programs work together to make a rich, connected, and layered whole. When new developments come into the neighborhood without an intent of contributing to this layering, connection between people is disrupted and the local community becomes increasingly fragmented.

Being totally community oriented can, and should, be the most profitable way of creating a place for future generations. Consisting of 172,450 sqft. of enclosed buildings, the project hosts retail facilities catering to every type of merchant and resident. A pop-up market hall gives ready space to rotating shopkeepers; a “FRESH” market provides a 24/7/365 farmer’s market to the area and combats the neighborhood’s food desert. An urban-agriculture center will not only supply this market, but also local businesses and the borough at large. Planned to have 217 rental units, of which 40% qualify as Inclusionary Housing, the building ensures an affordable and high quality short-term housing stock in light of rapid speculation. Stitching the project together, a rooftop green park rises to provide local residents a place to gather, relax, and spend time in a natural and healthy environment they can incorporate with ease into their daily routines.
